Mid Drive e-bike

Mid Drive e-bikes have the motor at the center of the e-bike.

They always have more torque than in-wheel hub motors and allow for some innovations that are different to the usual e-bike, such as belt drive and in-motor gears, instead of a derailleur.

As the power and torque is applied through the chain, with a multi-speed rear gearing the torque at the rear driving wheel is greatly increased, and thus steeper inclines are possible. This makes mid-drives popular in MTB and Cargo style e-bikes.

The higher torque allows for more torque at the wheels but still be within the legal power limit.

Their high torque can result in higher wear and tear if not driven correctly and they are more expensive to begin with.

And lastly, yes, they are a more expensive type of motor power.
